Producer / Consumer - The new personal computer paradigm ( Buying a Tablet PC )

Im sure you have all recently been to Coffee House or even business / professional meetings where you have seen a diverse group of computing devices in use; Laptops, Netbooks, Smartphones, Tablets, and Media Players.   Seeing all this variety I started thinking about a general paradigm for computing devices when trying to rationalize purchasing a Tablet PC recently.  I explain below...

History:
Tablet computing devices (what I define as mobile computer with an interactive screen) have come and gone over the decades and so has my interest in purchasing one.   For me it all started with seeing someone use an Apple Newton Message Pad in 1994.  While they were very clever devices I never really saw someone effectively using them without a) Running out of battery power or b) fighting with the handwriting recognition.   Either way I didnt have an abundance of cash back then so I never got around to owning one.   

In the 96 I purchased a PalmPilot PDA which quite literally changed my life in a way that no other computing device had ever done before or since.   I was able to keep track of ToDos, Grocery lists, calendar appointments, read books, read / send synced email, and even play games all on one device.  Even the Graffiti interface was extremely intuitive and easy to use for writing text.    I would hazard a guess that most folks that had early PDA's have since migrated onto using the smartphone form factor (Visor / Treo, Kyocera 6035, etc) as did I.  

This left a little bit of a gap in the Tablet concept until Microsoft reintroduced the concept in the early 2000s which were essentially the first round of large screen / big CPU Tablets to be produced.  As "Cool" or  "Star-Trek like" these devices were I could never justify spending money on that platform and really didnt know why at the time.   Curiously adoption rates weren't that high and I wouldn't really consider the platform a success unless you talk about the "Hybrid" Tablet PCs that evolved out of that.    

The recognition of a new computing platform paradigm started with the Hybrid Table PC.  These devices married an interactive touch screen with either a folding or swivel based keyboard that could be hidden.   Compaq was the first notable manufacturer of this devices for Microsoft's new platform and I was quick to pick up an HP Compaq TC4200.  Finally a computer I could justify spending thousands of dollars on! Well I have examined that justification over-and-over-again ever since, as the more I used that computer the less I used the interactive screen and the less I understood why I bought it in the first place.

The iPad!  Apple's re-introduction of the same concept, however, this time with "je ne sais quoi" that enables mass amount of people to purchase them.  There doesnt seem to be many profound differences over the earlier Tablet PCs other than a slightly more intuitive touch interface, perhaps a bit better battery life, and less weight.

And last but not least, the Apple chasing OEMs with various Android / Rim / WebOS based devices promising the same experience but unable to make as huge of a dent in the marketplace.

Paradigm:
For a long time Computing devices overall have been categorized as "Mainframe / Personal Computer", "Client / Server", "Desktop / Laptop", "Netbook", "Tablet / Phone", etc.    As technology increased in both computing capability, peer-to-peer protocols, and wireless digital networking I believe these categorizations need updating and is the key to understanding how a Tablet PC fits in.

Quite simply, in the Personal Computer world people are performing either two tasks; producing content or consuming it.   Therefore all PCs can be classified and weighted by their ability in these two areas of "Producer / Consumer".   This is obviously a very broad classification system that like all others has exceptions (Graphics Artist Producing Content who finds Tablets better than keyboards) so this categorization cannot be used without considering the user of the device.   But for the the general population I think device classification can applied and people should rationally consider how the device they are using fits into those two categories for them.

Now your thinking, well that is not very profound and quite obvious.  Well.. How obvious in the productive "producer" workplace?  How many times have you seen people in meetings are scrambling to enter data by hunting and pecking at a Tablet or Smartphone keyboard instead of their Laptop? ;)

SaaS (Cloud) Company Reliability

Recently our SaaS vendor, Rally Software http://www.RallyDev.com, Project Management Software has been having issues today staying online and got me thinking about reliability of software offerings hosted on the cloud.

 Background: According to online resources Rally Software revenues are between 10M-20M USD and this company has been offering their software exclusively SaaS (Sofware as a Service) for at least 6 years. A decent sized company boasting a lot of Fortune 500 companies as clients.

 During today's outage I have to wonder; Where is their Disaster Recovery? What possible issue could they have that would prevent another set of server's with different internet connections from taking over the load and provide uninterrupted service? I can only sit and wonder while our team is losing time not able to co-ordinate effectively.

Differences between Android and iOS (On Phone Platforms)

A long time Android user that I know switched to an iOS platform and that got me thinking about why and what are the current differences between the two platforms.  This is my attempt to gather my thoughts and share for input.

Once upon a time the only "SmartPhone" in town was the PalmOS / WinCE platforms.  When the iPhone first came out it was a very compelling platform to me because it was a new platform design primary for Touch based use, whereas I had been using stylus based interfaces on my prior phones.

Typical Apple UI engineering gave it an alluring pull to many, but the lack of functionality always steered me away in the end.   So what functionality was it lacking in comparison these past years?  Apple may have started the touch based device revolution, but they were certainly not quick to develop it out more.

As you can see there are quite a few gaps between the two and to me it would appear more features in favor of Android than iOS.   However, it is up to personal preference to attach appropriate weights to each of these to make a decision.  For now Im staying with my Android based phone.

UPB PIM / CIM Firmware Trouble

Just recently had another Simply Automated UPB PC interface Module (PIM) fail on me in Upstart.   While I was programming various devices, Upstart started reporting that it could not program the device because "Version 3.05 or higher is required".   Upon looking at the programming dialog I could see it was checking for the firmware version number and the device was reporting "Version: 0.00".

Going into diagnostics in upstart I could see all of the settings on the device were cleared.  Last time this happened I didnt know what was going on, thinking one of my experiments went bad, so I actually bought a new PIM and threw out the old one.   Well this time I dug in a little more, searched the internet, and found that you can do a factory reset to restore all of the registers.

Here's how to fix the PIM / CIM if this happens to you:
- Get a paperclip
- Plug Module into the wall
- Push the set button 5 times fast
- (interface will be flashing red)
- Push the set button 10 times fast
- (interface will be falshing green)
- Push the set button 2 times fast
- (device will reset)

Enjoy your PIM brought back from the dead.  Im thinking there is a flaw in the event model in UPstart that causes this.  Have to keep a look out in the future for the scenario.

Windows 7 - Shortcut to lock screen

Was missing the ability to click on an icon and lock the screen.

  1.  Right Click on desktop
  2. New -> Shortcut
  3. Location: "rundll32.exe user32.dll, LockWorkStation"
  4. Name: "Lock Screen"

Bridge Mode on the Timer Warner DOCSIS Broadband Extreme UBEE router

As the title suggests, I have recently switched internet providers to Time Warner and received their new DOCSIS wireless router manufactured by UBEE.   In its out of the box experience, this router will try to be your; A) Modem B) Router C) Wireless Access Point D) Firewall.

TW gives you a "user" account on the device to configure various end-user options.  Network security has been a hobby of mine for many decades and the thought of having a network device that someone else has admin and having access to my private subnet is not tolerable ;)

To disable all of the functionality of the UBEE modem/router and use your own equipment you need to do two things:

  • Disable the Wireless
    • http://192.168.0.1
    • user: user  password: user
    • Navigate To: Wireless -> Primary Network
    • Primary Network = Disable
  • Put the device into Bridge Mode (Hidden Menu)
    • http://192.168.0.1/TlModeChange.asp  ** Please note, others below have been seeing different IP addresses depending on what area you are in such as http://192.168.100.1/TlModeChange.asp
    • user: user  password: user
    • Tools - Operation Mode
    • Select "Bridge mode"
    • click "Apply"
    • Enjoy - The UBEE device will now have a 192.168.100.1 IP address and be out of your way.
  • ** From an Anonymous Source below:
    • The hidden menu has a "secret" admin username and password. The username is the last 8 digits of the Ubee's mac address, and the password is c0nf1gur3m3
    • So log out of the user account and log back in using the master password. Be careful what you do in that mode!

Android Device / Phone Recovery Mode Access Buttons

Been mod'ing a bunch of Android devices lately and am having a hard time keeping track of how to enter the recovery mode on each. ;) Thought Id list it here for yours and my benefit.


Samsung Galaxy 2 SkyRocket (SGH I727)

  1. Phone off
  2. Hold Vol-UP & Vol-DOWN & Power buttons until the "Samsung" Logo appears.
HTC EVO 3D (Shooter):
  1. Ensure Phone is completely off (fastboot is turned off) or simply do a battery pull before proceeding
  2. Hold "Vol Down" + "Power" until white HBOOT screen appears

LG Optimus S (LS670):

  1. Hold "Vol Down" + "Home" + "Power" until LG Slash screen appears


HTC EVO 4G (Super Sonic):

  1. Hold "Vol Down" + "Power" until white HBOOT screen appears


HTC Hero (cdma):

  1. Hold "Home" + "Power" (red button) until recovery appears


B&N Nook Touch 2nd Edition (N2E):

  1. Press "Power" until screen changes
  2. Immediately Hold "Bottom Left" + "Bottom Right" buttons until wipe screen appears
